HOW TO CONTROL THE BALANCE OF YOUR TABLE TENNIS Blade
WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION WITH TABLE TENNIS blades: TOP-HEAVY VS. GRIP-heavy
EACH PLAYER HAS HIS OWN IDEA OF THE IDEAL WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION OF HIS TABLE TENNIS BLADE.
WHILE ONE PLAYER PREFERS A RATHER TOP-HEAVY BLADE, THE OTHER FEELS MORE COMFORTABLE WITH A GRIP-HEAVY BLADE - HERE THERE IS NO RIGHT OR WRONG, BUT EVERYONE HAS TO FIND THE PERFECT BALANCE FOR HIMSELF.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TOP-HEAVY AND GRIP-HEAVY?
Depending on where the centre of gravity of a table tennis bat is, one speaks of a top-heavy, a grip-heavy or a balanced blade.
If the centre of gravity is at the front of the blade, one speaks of top-heaviness - if it is rather at the back of the blade, one speaks of grip-heaviness.
top-heavy blades
Top-heavy blades often have a large blade so that the centre of gravity is as far forward as possible. This is especially popular with offensive players who like to play topspins. The weight pulls outwards when pulled, brings additional power and automatically sets the arm in the right motion. A clear advantage when playing topspin.
Grip-heavy blades
Players who prefer to stand close to the table and rarely play topspin do not need this weight. Many players therefore prefer table tennis blades with a heavy handle because they feel lighter in the hand. So if you stand at the table like many other material players and cut them off, you'll usually be better off with a blade with a heavy grip.
All in all, however, it is purely a matter of feeling and everyone must decide for themselves what suits them best.
top-heaviness
- WELL SUITED FOR TOPSPINS
- WEIGHT PULLS OUTWARDS = MORE MOMENTUM
- ARM IS GUIDED IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION
- BLADE FEELS HEAVIER
grip-heaviness
- BLADE FEELS LIGHTER THAN IT IS
- WELL SUITED FOR PLAYERS WHO STAND CLOSE TO THE TABLE AND RARELY PLAY TOPSPINS
HOW CAN I INFLUENCE THE WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION?
You can precisely control the balance of your blade through the following factors:
1. Choice of the blade size
The blade size has the greatest influence on the balance of the table tennis blade. A large blade shifts the center of gravity far towards the head and is therefore particularly suitable for topspins. The smaller the blade, the further the center of gravity moves to the center of the paddle. Depending on which handle you combine this blade with, you will get a balanced to grip-heavy blade.
In our configurator you can choose from the 4 blade sizes: S, M, L and the extra large defensive form and thus adapt the size perfectly to your wishes.
2. Choice of the handle material
Another decisive factor for controlling the balance is the choice of handle material. We currently offer 8 solid wood types as well as 6 coloured fineline variants, all of which differ in weight.
Many players think that the choice of handle material is only a question of appearance - but it should not be forgotten that the choice of the right material can influence the behaviour of your table tennis blade enormously.
If you want to play a blade with a heavy grip, choose a heavy wood type such as colour no. 8 - if you want to support the top-heaviness of the blade even further, choose a light material for the grip such as a coloured fineline grip or colour no. 4.

3. handle shape and length
If you want to fine-tune your blade even further, you can do so by choosing the shape and length of the handle.
The shape of the grip has to fit well in the hand and match the playing requirements, e.g. quick and easy rotation. Once you have decided on the right combination, you can now decide whether you want to influence the weight via the thickness of the handle shapes.
If you want to save weight, e.g. to increase the top-heaviness, choose the thin version (A or C) - vice versa the thick version (B or D) to shift more weight to the handle.
The same applies to the choice of handle length - we offer all handles in two lengths: normal 100mm and long 103mm.
The long version is suitable for players with large hands, but is also used for weight adjustment, even when the length is not needed.
If you want to shift more weight to the handle, you can do this by choosing a long handle - if you want to increase the top-heaviness even more, choose a handle with normal length.
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NORMAL LENGTH NARROW GRIPS AND 103MM STRONG GRIPS IS ONLY A FEW GRAMS, BUT THERE ARE MANY POSSIBILITIES FOR FINE TUNING.
IN THE CONFIGURATOR YOU CAN SEE HOW THE CHOICE OF DIFFERENT SHAPES AND MATERIALS AFFECTS THE WEIGHT.
